The Vey bridge is located on the Vire, between Carentan and Isigny-sur-Mer in the Calvados department. It was initiated in 1804 with the sinking of 650 pilings approximately 60 ft (18m) long as foundations. The marshy area made the task difficult for the 700 workers. Completed in 1825, the bridge consists of five arches, spaced 20 ft (6 m) apart, in granite with floating doors. The gates drain waters from the marshes at low tide and enabled the exploitation of 6,177 acres (2,500 ha) of new agricultural lands. The former Route Royale (Royal Road) from Paris to Cherbourg used the Vey bridge.
