The southern side of the Infernet ridge in the Briançonnais descends towards the Cerveyrette valley, marking a flat area at Poët-Morand. There, 5,045 ft (1,538 m) above sea level, the Fort des Salettes was built between 1709 and 1712 according to Vauban's plans under the direction of the engineer Tardif. The fort, consisting of a square tower surrounded by a ditch and a counterscarp gallery with reverse fires, aimed at exposing the enemies under the crossfire of both the tower and the gallery. A Latin sentence meaning Who would dare to fight me is engraved in the stone of the redoubt.
