On the edge of the cliff

A few miles South of the village of Carolles, a stone guardhouse stands strong on the edge of the cliff. The hut belongs to a set of defences desired by Vauban in the 17th century so as to monitor the movements of enemy ships. The unobstructed view over the bay meant that any invader could be seen coming from afar. It is also an excellent location to appreciate the rare magnitude of the tides, since from the top of the cliff the bay is easily distinguishable from the open sea. The view extends over dozens of miles, offering a general view of an exceptional phenomenon.
