The Calvados coast is a 50 miles (80 km) long ribbon bordered by steep cliffs, pebble, and sandy beaches. It was chosen as a landing site in 1944, between Ouistreham and Quinéville, in order to establish a beachhead. While five beaches were divided between Americans, English, and Canadians, Omaha Beach, between Colleville-sur-Mer and Vierville-sur-Mer, was remembered the most. Nicknamed Bloody Omaha by the GIs, it claimed the lives of 1,000 soldiers. The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial of Colleville-sur-Mer shelters the bodies of 9,387 soldiers who perished on the beach and in the following months during the Battle of Normandy.
