Omaha Beach in Normandy

On June 6, 1944 at dawn, the largest landing in history began. 6,939 ships landed 132,700 Americans and 20,000 vehicles on the beaches of Normandy called Juno, Gold, Sword Utah and Omaha. These young men, aged 20 to 23, will face a formidable deluge of fire and show extraordinary courage. 9388 of them will remain forever on this Normandy coast that they came to liberate. 307 could not even be identified and 1557 were never found. The endless alignment of Italian white marble crosses gives way to meditation and dread near this Omaha beach called “the bloody.” They rest forever in the American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-mer.
