Old Me in Canari

In Canari, the remains of the old asbestos mine form a strange sculpture on the cliff. Discovered in 1898, it was the main French asbestos deposit. These fibrous-textured minerals were used for their flame retardant and insulating properties. Closed since 1965, it produced up to 28,000 tonnes of ore per day. In France, the use of asbestos has been banned since 1997 because of its toxicity.
