Many birds live or migrate in the Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve in northeastern Honduras. This 350,000 hectare area protects the entire watershed of Río Plátano, from its headwaters coming from the mountains to the mouth of the river on the Caribbean coast. 411 bird species have been documented there, six of which are on the World Red List of Threatened Species of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
