The Dominican convent in Unterlinden was founded by two noble widows in the first half of the 13th century. It was located at the place called “sub tilia” or “unter den linden” (under the lime trees) and was under the direction of the Dominicans. Its cloister is an almost perfect square with four galleries and fourteen arcades to the north and east and thirteen arcades to the south and west. Each arcade of the cloister is composed of a tier-point arch subdivided by a filling of two tri-lobed arches, topped by a four-lobed rose. These arches are supported by a column with naked capitals and round or octagonal abacuses.
