The Haut-Koenigsbourg castle was almost entirely destroyed by the Swedish army in 1633. After being abandoned for some two centuries, it was offered to Emperor Wilhelm II of Hohenzollern by the city of Sélestat in 1899. Dreaming of reviving the Holy Roman Empire, the Kaiser entrusted the restoration of Haut-Koenigsbourg to the architect Bodo Ebhardt, a specialist in medieval fortification. The colossal project was to legitimize the young dynasty of Wilhelm II and demonstrate the power of its newly formed empire to the eyes of the world.
