Unlike man, the dolphin's breathing is a voluntary and non-reflexive act which must be maintained during its sleep. It has therefore developed a single-hemisphere sleep with only one of its cerebral hemispheres asleep at a time while the other controls its vital functions (breathing, maintenance of the body at the surface, control of the opening/closing of the blowhole...). It thus always keeps one eye open.
