Occupied during World War II

The architecture of Brégançon Castle stands out by the odd number (three) of towers flanking the main building. Built at the end of the 1830s, these cylindrical towers were not expected to play a defensive role similar to medieval structures. However, the castle was successively occupied by the Italians (from June 1940 to December 1942) and the Germans (until August 1945) during World War II. It was then transformed into a stronghold and completely repainted for better camouflage, and trenches, bunkers, and cannons lined its terrace.
