The site of the locality of Ménerbes in the Vaucluse department has been occupied since the Paleolithic period. It was first invaded by peoples from central Europe and then by the Ligurians, Greeks, and Romans. The village of Ménerbes, named after the Roman goddess Minerva, was a stage on the Via Domitia that linked Rome to Cadiz in Spain.
