At the heart of the Lorraine Regional Nature Park, Madine Lake is a refuge protected by Natura 2000. Its 2,718 acres (1,100 ha) are home to more than 250 bird species that awaken at first light. The Pointe aux Chênes observatory, opposite Bois Gérard island that stands in the lake's center, allows observing the birds from a distance. In addition, tranquility zones are established each year, from October, to guarantee the well-being of the migratory birds that stop on their route towards the African coasts.
