Ornithologist Antoine Cubaixo has been working at Lac du Der since 2010. More than 300 species of birds live on or around the lake all year round or stay there during migration. From mid-October to mid-March, tens of thousands of Common Cranes (Grus grus) pass through the lake to rest before heading further south. Antoine Cubaixo is equipped with a high quality spotting scope that allows him to see them as if they were at his feet. He is also an active member of the local League for the Protection of Birds (LPO-CA) for which he carries out daily counts.
