The Przewalski horses store their energy reserves throughout their musculature, which allows them to better withstand the fluctuations in the energy they store. Their cecum contains bacteria and protozoa to digest the cellulose of the plants they ingest without having to ruminate on the food they eat. They can thus feed on buds, leaves and even barks when the grass is scarce in winter.
