Numerous yet fragile eggs

Cicadas dedicate their short aerial life to searching mates in order to perpetuate the species. Unfortunately, only five percent of the four hundred eggs laid by the cicada reach adulthood. The others are parasitized from the moment they are laid by chalciditis - a small black fly the size of an ant that injects its germ at the same time as the cicada - centrodoras and other mites. Only the prodigality of the cicada allows it to survive these threats.
