The origin of the name of the locality of Gorbio is linked to its Celtic root gol or gor, which means perched site or plateau. It was later Latinized into golbium. The village of the Alpes-Maritimes department was mentioned under the name of Golbi in 1157 before appearing under its current designation in 1301. In 1860, following the referendum on its attachment to the French Second Empire, the name of Gorbio was briefly francized as Gorbie.
