Lake Madine and its surroundings are home to rich animal biodiversity. With more than 250 birds species observable on its waters, the area was classified as an Important Birds Conservation Area (ZICO). The floristic diversity of the site is also significant as it includes more than 10% of Lorraine's flora. In addition to the avifauna, Lake Madine shelters more than 40 mammals species, including carnivores, bats, and rodents. The 2,718 acres (1,100 ha) site is protected under the Natura 2000 program.
