Now a species in its own right

The scientific community has long considered that the greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) was divided into two subspecies: the red flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber ruber) from the New World (Central and South America, Caribbean) and the pink flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber roseus), from the Old World (Western Mediterranean, South-East Africa, Central Asia, North-West India). However, taxonomic research based on genetic studies made it possible at the beginning of the 2000s to give both the Phoenicopterus ruber and Phoenicopterus roseus the status of species in their own right.
