Butterflies feed on leaves only at the caterpillar stage. It is at this stage that they consume most of the food they absorb during their lifetime. The powerful mandibles of the caterpillars shred the leaves to facilitate digestion. Once butterflies, they have a horn-shaped mouth and mainly aspire the very sugar rich nectar of flowers.
