Notre-Dame of Epernay

The first Notre Dame church, in Renaissance style, was built in Epernay in the 16th century. Due to its poor condition, it collapsed twice, in 1824 and in 1892. The church was rebuilt by the architect Paul Selmersheim, on the site of a former Ursuline convent, from 1898 onwards. Built in a medieval transitional style – Romanesque on the outside, Gothic on the inside – Notre-Dame was bombed in 1918. Restoration works were undertaken quickly after the end of the war. A sacred art area contains liturgical vestments, 15th and 16th century statues, and a 15th century tombstone.
