Built on the limestone peak of La Garde hill at an altitude of 488 ft (149 m), Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde is the highest point in Marseille. In order to keep watching over the city and its inhabitants as a Bonne Mère (Good Mother), it must not be topped by any other construction. Straddling the Roucas Blanc and Vauban districts, it is photographed here from the east of the city, around the 9th and 10th arrondissements towards Aubagne, and stands out unusually on the skyline of the sea.
