A sponsor for every fallen soldier

The Normandy association ‘Les Fleurs de la mémoire’ (The Flowers of Memory) always takes part in the yearly celebrations held at the American Cemeteries of Colleville-sur-Mer (Calvados) and Saint-James (Manche). The association’s volunteers sponsor one or more fallen soldiers, and commit to flower their graves at least once a year, and if possible on Memorial Day, on every last Monday in May. The idea for the association came from Major Towers, an American veteran now deceased, who was inspired by the military cemeteries in Holland which would be decorated with flowers by anonymous citizens. Today, almost all soldiers buried in these cemeteries are sponsored, including even those whose names are inscribed on the Wall of the Missing.
