Not destined to its strategic vocation

At the end of the 17th century, the erection of a bastioned wall around Briançon aimed to protect the city, located in an insecure zone, without any desire to make it a fortress with a strategic vocation. However, the events of 1692, followed by the Treaties of Turin (1696) and Utrecht (1713) and the subsequent significant border rectifications, placed Briançon in the front line and made it the keystone of the defense of the Alps. Such changes had major consequences in terms of global fortification and logistical infrastructure.
