Outside the breeding season, the northern fulmar has a very pelagic lifestyle, roaming over large areas of ocean in search of food obtained by surface-seizing. It glides over the sea just above the surface, only giving a series of shallow, rapid wing beats then it needs a pattering run on the water surface in order to take off. It can also plunge to a depth of 3 meters.
