Jean-Baptiste Courtonne, known as le Jeune, was a popular architect in Paris in the 1740s. He rebuilt the Hôtel d’Albret, in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, for its new owner, Jean-Baptiste-Charles du Tillet, Marquis de La Bussière. It was therefore only natural that in 1754 the marquis’ son, Charles-Jean-Baptiste du Tillet, should choose him to build the Château du Haut de Villarceaux. Situated on a plateau, the Louis XV style castle offers a breathtaking view of the Vexin. The entrance is via the north facade, which has its back to the estate, but faces the main courtyard of the château.
