Nonza, on the west coast of the Corsican Cape, is recognizable by its paoline tower and its Sainte-Julie (Santa Ghjulia) church with its walls painted with a pink wash and its roof covered with teghjie (lauzes). Built in 1757 by order of Pascal Paoli to defend the independence of the island, the schist bastion - now the emblem of the city - is an exception among the mostly Genoese towers of the coast.
