Not endemic to the Mediterranean area

Cicadas are not endemic to the Mediterranean region, like the Sainte-Victoire massif in Southeastern France. There are more than 4,500 species distributed throughout the warm areas of the world. Southeast Asia welcomes the most species (over 850), followed by Sub-Saharan Africa and South America (around 400 species each), then Australia (roughly 240 species). The area covering Europe and North Africa comes only fourth with about 150 species of cicadas.
