Ninon de Lenclos’ pavilion

Louis de Mornay (1619-1691), Marquis of Villarceaux, fell in love with the beautiful Ninon de Lenclos. Eventually seduced by this epicurean, Ninon became his mistress. The lovers settled down at the manor of Villarceaux and their love affair lasted for about three years. A boy was born of their romance and the Château de Villarceaux was decorated with a pavilion reserved for Ninon. The Marquis was married to Denise de La Fontaine d’Esche, lady-in-waiting of Queen Anne of Austria, who lived on another property. When the jealous wife unexpectedly arrived at the manor, Ninon slipped away through the underground passages that lead to the outside of the estate.
