El nombre de Nidularium deriva del latín nidulus, diminutivo de nidus= nido que indica su particular estructura dispuesta como un nido. El primer conocimiento que se tiene de esta planta es a finales del S. XIX.
El Nidulario pertenece a la familia de las Bromeliaceas, y su género está integrado por unas 30 especies vivaces epifitas (que viven en las ramas de los árboles con raices aéreas). Su área natural son las selvas tropicales de Brasil.
Las hojas están reunidas en rosetas cerradas, con los márgenes dentados y las centrales más pequeñas y de color rojo
