Named Koteuteu by the inhabitants of Niau, this bird, who lives in coconut tree trunks, is endangered. Notably, in regard to the threats posed by cats and rats who climb in the trunks and eat the eggs and chicks. Against these animals, which were brought by man, the Niau kingfisher has proven to be powerless. The local population has mobilized in order to prevent this endemic species from disappearing.
