Niaouli on the soils of Grande-Terre
2
0
Niaouli (Melaceuca quinquinervia), recognizable by its white bark, is a very widespread species in New Caledonia. It belongs to the Myrtaceae family and resists the almost annual fires of the savannahs of the west of Grande-Terre thanks to its very thick bark which unravels in successive skins. Present in the savannahs dedicated to extensive farming, it also grows in a more stunted version on the uneven and naturally very poor soils of the acid scrub or those very degraded by the human exploitation of the subsoil.
