In the Cité du Train-Patrimoine SNCF, a sign announces the next departure of steam locomotive 232 U1 Hudson which starts every 30 minutes to demonstrate how the rods work. This last model in the series designed by engineer Marc de Caso was delivered to the SNCF in 1949. Nicknamed the “Divine”, the machine was capable of developing 3,300 horsepower at a speed of 100 to 124 mph (160 to 200 km/h). With its aerodynamic profile, the 232 U1 is a testament to the ultimate improvements applied to steam traction. Its career ended in 1961, after 13 years of loyal service on the Paris-Lille line.
