About a century after the introduction of cattle in New Caledonia and the development of breeding stations bringing together up to 25,000 heads on 26,000 ha, the cattle tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Canestrini) was unfortunately introduced into the archipelago in 1942. The presence of this parasite has disrupted the practices by forcing the breeders to abandon historic breeds too sensitive to ticks in favor of more resistant ones which still constitute the herd of the archipelago.
