Neptune’s victory over Amphitrite
0
0
At the request of Louis XIV, Charles Le Brun composed, from 1663 onwards, a decoration for the walls and vault of the Gallery of Apollo. The “Triumph of the Waters” was created between 1664 and 1677. Charles Le Brun painted Amphitrite, who was forcibly abducted by Neptune but finally agreed to marry him. The horses, still foaming, bear witness to the recent abduction, and slaves bring a chest full of coral as a wedding present. Amphitrite is holding a silk scarf that brings movement to the painting while Neptune, serene, carries his trident straight, sure of his victory over Amphitrite.
