Reims Cathedral's nave
0
0
The nave of Reims Cathedral is imposing, with its 488 ft length (149 m). Its relative narrowness accentuates the impression of height (124 ft / 38 m). The nave elevates on three levels, in an architecture typical of the French Gothic of the 13th century. It consists, among other things, of arcades forming ten bays and of high windows with two lancets, surmounted by a six-foils rose window. The stained-glass windows that covered them were removed in the 18th century at the request of the believers who could not read their missals. The proportions of the nave and the columns of Reims Cathedral obey the golden ratio (1.618), dear to the builders of the Middle Ages.
