The lake of Longemer is one out of three in the Valley of the Lakes, along with Gérardmer's and Retournemer's. It is a glacial lake and one of the largest in the Vosges mountains. It was naturally born, from the Vologne glacier, during the last ice age (from 70,000 to 10,000 years BC). This glacier was nearly 25 mi (40 km) long back then. It hollowed out these flared valleys characterized by a wide and flat bottom. The Valley of the Lakes narrows upstream from the village of Xonrupt-Longemer.
