Narwhal, mysterious marine mammal in Arctic
1
0
The narwhal or unicorn of the sea lives all year round in Arctic waters. This mysterious species takes its name from the old Norse (medieval Scandinavian language) nar (corpse) and hvalr (whale) referring to its habit to float motionless on the surface and to its skin color resembling that of a drowned sailor. It is closely linked to the Arctic native people culture: it was hunted for its source of food and for its famous twisted tooth which was traditionally used for so-called medicinal properties and for carving. Inuit people name it by several words: “tuugaalik” (white tusk), “qirniqtaq qilalugaq” (black whale) and “allanguaq” (spotted with black and white).
