Narrow and winding medieval streets

The streets of medieval villages, like in Sainte-Agnès in the Alpes-Maritimes department, are narrow and often winding. They are bordered by tightly packed buildings and sometimes spanned by arcades that deprive them of light even in broad daylight. The medieval streets are more often made of beaten earth reinforced with stone than truly paved and have no sidewalk nor gutter.
