Mutual protection
The horses of the same herd take turns in monitoring the potential predators, when the rest of the herd rests, feeds or drinks. Horses are not cut for confrontation nor fight, they react by fleeing when confronted with danger. Hence, when the watchers perceive the slightest danger, the whole herd instinctively takes flight.
