Music and virginity

The large rose window of Reims Cathedral is entirely dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Overhung by Christ, she is surrounded by 24 musician angels, 19 of whom carry musical instruments from the Middle Ages (horn, clarinet with three bells, flute, guitar, harp, oboe, psaltery, tambourine, violin). The rose's outer border displays the kings of the Old Testament, and prophets and angels wear the crown of bliss. Its colors are brighter than those of the smaller rose window below, and its diameter reaches 40 ft (12 m). It consists of 12 petals symbolizing the 12 apostles. Only the left half would be original, as the other half did not withstand the heat of the fire of 1914.
