The legs of the Hermann's tortoise (Testudo hermanni hermanni) are very muscular and able to lift the animal's weight, which can reach 2.2 lbs (1 kg) in adulthood. The front legs, significantly stronger and more developed than the hind legs, are terminated with five fingers linked together and fitted with claws that allow the tortoise to dig the earth to hibernate. They are covered with fine scales like the rest of the reptile's skin.
