The masked moray has a poor vision and relies mainly on its very sensitive sense of smell and its sensory lateral pores to detect its preys. Its nostrils form two clearly visible tubes above its upper jaw. Hunting at night, it feeds on fish, crustaceans and molluscs. It is able to pull the tentacle of an octopus by forming a knot with its tail and pulling it up to its head.
