Mullioned fenestration of the Fontfroide Abbey

The Abbey of Fontfroide was attached to the ‘Order of Cîteaux’ in 1145. However, its architecture today no longer reflects the austerity and the promotion of poverty that characterize the beliefs of Cistercian monks. The design of the buildings took on the looks of a castle, especially with mullioned fenestration and classic pediments. The presence of the commendatory abbots (abbey held in commendam that is to say temporarily) and the relaxation of the small monastic community of Fontfroide caused these changes.
