The heart of the MUCEM (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations) is a building with modern architecture built on the former J4 port jetty by the architect Rudy Ricciotti associated with Roland Carta. It consists of two intertwined square plans including exhibition and conference rooms, an auditorium, and workshops. Between these two volumes, a ramp leads from the ground floor of the museum to its panoramic terrace through an organization of volumes and paths evocative of ziggurats, religious buildings of Mesopotamian origin. The height of the MUCEM (62 ft / 19 m) allows its alignment with Fort Saint-Jean, to which it is connected by a footbridge. The MUCEM's glass and concrete lace facades favor transparency and openness.
