Middle Ages and Renaissance

Housed in the former Dominican convent in Colmar, founded in 1232, the Unterlinden Museum features a remarkable collection of sculptures and paintings from the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Since the major restoration works of 2012-2015, the collections in the rooms of the Gothic cloister have been organised chronologically. In this room, a woodblock painting from 1510 depicts St. Wendelin of Trier. This panel, which belonged to an altarpiece that has now disappeared, is painted on both sides. The other side shows St. Ursula and the 11,000 virgins. Neither the painter nor the workshop are known, but the work is sure to be related to the Northern Gothic movement.
