Black-headed Gull at Lake Der-Chantecoq

The Lac du Der-Chantecoq (Lake Der-Chantecoq) is the main ornithological area in Europe. In early autumn, its waters are at their lowest, revealing mudflats that provide a haven for more than 300 species of sedentary or migratory birds. They have an abundance of food there and are protected from tourists within these restricted areas. Some live there all year round – such as the Great Egrets (Ardea alba) or the Grey Herons (Ardea cinerea) – whilst others only make a stop during their migration, such as the Grey Cranes (Grus grus). Simple Black-headed Gulls (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) also make their home here.
