The city of Pont Audemer in the Eure is the little Venice of Normandy. Its typical Norman architecture with its rag houses, corbelled roofs and canals make it a unique site. Stuck between two arms of the Risle River, the tanners who came to settle there developed a whole network of canals in order to wash their skins. The Middle Ages and the Renaissance saw it prosper. Later a metal loop foundry would complete this leather industry whose fame went as far as England.
