Mosses in the Vosges
Native spruces are plentiful in the forest of Ribeauvillé, at the feet of Riquewihr. They also grow at the base of screes, in the glaciers, and on the edges of peat bogs. Under their shadow, at the base of the rocky escarps, they host numerous moss species such as Dicrane or Orkney notchwort. From oozing cracks in the rocks, the deep green, water-soaked cushions of Yoke-moss emerge. Slow water-catching species colonize only the dry fissures.
