Black-backed jackal hold its French name, chacal à chabraque, from the black and long trail that continues on the base of its tail. It remembers the hussars' shabrack of Napoleon. Its thin and resistant legs rest on 4 fingers and 5 pads. A 5th finger, inside the paw, does not touch the ground. The continuously growing claws are not retractile.
